And I’m not tired. I swear, I’m not. My brain is working razor sharp at 3:30 am, ready to churn out the blueprint of past 8 months of hard work, product trials, travel, cut throat negotiations. Today morning is one of the biggest days of my life, this is an opportunity people crave for years and probably decades at Inger Aerospace.

Being an ex-member of Special Forces helps. I’m trained not to drop the focus, and never let any complacency creep in, no matter what the situation turns out to be. After all, earning the Green Berets involved lot of pride, blood and belief. The pride stemmed from the fact the motto was de oppresso liber, means to free the oppressed. I have had so many moments of adrenaline rush in my days with the “Falcon” team.

Fighting in the South American continent with multiple adversaries who had no rules, no time of attack and no code of conduct. Probably International Court of Justice in Hague was as unknown to them as love is to me. Jack, our guerilla chief rued the fact, after every successful mission completion I was the first one to enlist for the next operation. Probably because I had no one, practically no one, zilch to share my life and live a normal life which is just a camouflage till our next operation.

Coming back to what is happening today. An agreement is being inked between the visiting dignitary of a South Asian regime and Inger Aerospace top brass for selling our new arsenal to our their country and I’m the key to this deal worth billions of euros. The dignitary is the present ruler. The title you will use to address him will depend on what prism you use to judge such people. If you probably went to Yale for International relations or human rights, I would not be surprised if you called him a dictator or creator of the junta.
These people are actually harmless when you meet them in person independent of their demeanor. They are just like me, to the point, deprived of emotions, calculative and extremely secretive...

to be continued..
http://rajat.ahuja.name/blog/

Paradise Lost

"The mind is its own place, and in itself
Can make a heav’n of hell, a hell of heav’n"

It has been almost 64 days of siege in Kashmir valley. Ladakh has been hit by a severe catastrophe. It seems destiny of this state has been plagued by misfortune from the last 800 years. King VikramAditya and Sultan Zain-ul-abdin rule were the only golden eras in past milleniums. Post that it has been just misfortune. Be it anyone, Afghan raiders, Mughals, Sikh rulers.. Always one portion of the population was subject to prosecution.

One of the turning point in history has been the events of 1947-49 for this part of the world. People divided amongst three countries India, Pakistan and China. Strangely it is a bilateral dispute, no one counts China. They are a party too with Aksai Chin completely in their control and with territory gifted by Pakistan during 1960's.

It has become a point of ego between the nations with majority of population whether it is Muslims in the valley, Buddhists in Ladakh, Dogras in Jammu, Kashmiri migrants across the state asking for their rights and dignity. There is another aspect with the Pakistani administered Kashmir being divided into Northern Areas with ethnic groups like Hunzas being sidelined in their representation or areas in Mirpur where there is Punjabi domination.

UN resolutions have become obselete in today's context. There have been agreements like Shimla and Agra agreements whose promises were tossed out of the windows years ago and much water has flown down the Jhelum in these years. Can an independent nation exist? Does not seem feasible.

I dont think political packages like autonomy will change the situation on the ground. The seperatists are running the govt virtually with their calendars being followed. You cannot solve this complex problem with sending more forces.

the civil society has to rise to the occasion. Give an opportunity to the voices from Ladakh, Kashmir, Jammu everywhere. Make them feel part of the mainstream. Understand their perspective. Develop Ladakh into a tourist hub, develop industries in Jammu, reduce military presence in Kashmir, let J&K Police take care of law and order. Army is not trained for law and order, it is meant for combat.

Open schools, hospitals, make infrastructure like SEZ's. Make people like President Kalam as custodian of these funds so that they are embezzled.

Change will work. Respect, dignity, opportunities to prosper, remove barriers, abolish article 370. Let the population mingle with rest of India, make them part of mainstream. It should not be an exercise to change demographics, but to assimilate.

Concept of India is unity in diversity. We have diversity, now we need unity.

Peace!
http://rajat.ahuja.name/blog/

4GenerationNxt

Media is not the fourth estate, but it is fourth pillar after judiciary, executive and legislature in my opinion. Isnt it ironical our media in India goes in a tailspin when leading personalities of the Bollywood or political class create a needless controversy?

All these years, media has neglected the real issues, like development, employment, price rise which are conveniently put at the back burner and media is more interested in getting "bytes" from the creme de la creme of our society. There is no effort to bring the marginalized people into the mainstream where they can be part of the "India shining" story. Have we as a nation tried to figure out where we are heading?

We are a young nation, although the civilisation is centuries old. what happened to our intellectuals?
topic of drawing rooms in our country is trivial issues .. move on people, we need to strongly embrace principles of equality, opportunity, then will we write our destiny.

Democracy is not just power to choose govt of your choice, it is about freedom of choice, expression, living with dignity and honor. All the great revolutions in the world, including French and American brought about a renaissance in their respective countries because the founding fathers of these countries believed and lived by these ideals.

I dont dream a state of utopia. I m practical.
Where were these media spin doctors when kashmir was going through a turmoil? It has been going from last 20 yrs. Everyday people are dying, crying for justice and honor, what about when J&K residents had to become refugees in their country in 1990,
what about today's scenario? how many new colleges/ professional schools have been opened in the state? these issues dont get u TRP's, eyeballs.. but trivial issues of bollywood do.

I m hopeful about our generation, we are young with a never say die attitude.
We will make a change, amen!
http://rajat.ahuja.name/blog/

United we stand

I have been unable to sleep after seeing the images of Mumbai from past week।

We defeated terror, we showed resilience, we did not negotiate with barbarians. Our NSG, Army, MARCOS, Mumbai Police, Fire Department, staff of hotels, volunteers who helped, who risked their lives for saving hostages all made me proud.
But I m terribly disappointed with the response of our rulers post the incidents in Mumbai. We have nincompoops like our erstwhile Union Home Minister who are loyalists of the dynasty but have no spine in curbing this turmoil. Mumbai incident became his waterloo.
In fact, the previous central govt had a terrible record themselves। Majority of the rulers today are not connected to the grass roots. They can just divide us on basis of religion we follow or region we belong to. These are the same people who have been practicing their own agenda of sons of the soil. And the irony is even the sons of the soil don’t prosper. Whether it is farmers versus Tata motors in Singrur, or Narayan Murthy(from Infy) versus local politicians in Karnataka. Politicians had the audacity to question men of honor like Ratan Tata or NRN and even accused them of land grabbing!!

Take example of the Kerala CM who insulted the father of the NSG major who laid his life for the country.
I would question the CM if he actually had any right to gate crash. He should have been sensitive towards parents who had lost their young son and not trivialize Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s supreme sacrifice. He should have respected their privacy and not played his vote politics.
Another example of disdain shown by politicians is the way how RamGopal Verma the filmmaker was invited by Maharashtra CM for disaster tourism। I don’t understand how a CM can invite his family and his friends? Were they visiting for collecting forensic evidence or what they were doing is beyond my comprehension?

Remember my first post about honoring our heroes. If we forget, we will no longer have Gajendra Singh or Sandeep UnniKrishnan and members of Mumbai Police and Fire dept laying their lives for saving innocents.
Why should they? We are an ungrateful nation। These folks fought with outdated equipment courtesy babus who don’t think a soldier in Siachen needs a snow mobile or cops require better bullet proof equipment. We expect our cops who have outdated .303 from the British Raj will save us from terrorists with AK-47/ AK-56 assault rifles?

The question is not only about equipment, it is about will. Will to change the course of a country which houses almost 1/7 of humanity. Do citizens of India need to live in terror and worry they might become victims?
We have no politician of caliber of Sardar Patel who had the foresight, energy to unite people immediately after the gruesome partition. Our present politicians pale in contrast.
The bane of South Asia has been the kind of politics being practiced in this region। We can claim there is democracy in some pockets, but if you look closely, it is all dynasty rule. India with their Gandhis, Pakistan with Bhuttos, and so on. It is one of the poorest regions in the world with bulk of the population below poverty line with no access to education or basic infrastructure to live a life with dignity.

Have we ever wondered about our North east? Assam, Nagaland, Manipur have been gripped by this reign of terror all these years. Since it did not exist in the drawing rooms of the elite in Delhi, it does not even get acknowledged.
After a lot of soul searching, I question myself, do we deserve this?
The answer comes in an instant. And it says YES. We deserve the politicians we choose.
We are becoming used to now and this is not right. Our cities are getting bombed in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, Ajmer, Delhi and so on. There are murmurs, but they will die as soon as something else comes up.
I don’t expect things to change overnight।

In this battle between civilized humans and uncivilized, civil society has to win, with its conduct, with doing its karma without getting intimated by those who want to scare the rest. The whole world is affected today. Remember Bali, London, Madrid, New York, Mumbai. Any sane human would prefer living a day with honor and dignity rather than live a life of terror.
Need of the hour to stand united. With your family, your neighbor, community, city, country and the world.
Thanks to all my readers across the world. I m happy to know people in Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Morocco, Oman, Bulgaria, Canada read my blog where I don’t have any direct acquaintances or friends. All these days I have been praying for peace to return and it remains forever...

Glimmer of hope is J&K was the only place in South Asia during August 1947 which did not have any communal riots.. I just hope Kashmiriyat makes a comeback to the state and issues are solved amicably without any bloodshed and without compromising on any region's /group's honor..

I m reminded of George Carlin.. and the paradox of our time in history
we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers

wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints

we have more degrees, but less sense

more knowledge,but less judgment

more experts, but more problems

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We've learned how to make a living, but not a life; we've added years to life, not life to years.

We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor.

We've conquered outer space, but not inner space.

We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.

We've split the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less.

My prayers to the Supreme Power to let peace reign..
Please say Amen to that!
http://rajat.ahuja.name/blog/

Crude maths!

Some facts to ponder over
1> Exxon Mobile earned a staggering USD 40.6 Billion in year 2007
2> Exxon along with Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron plus one more oil giant earned profits of USD 100 billion last year
3> Oil industry return on equity is more than 27% last year
4> Crude oil price jumped from USD 20 a barrel in 1996 to USD 140+ per barrel today.
that is more than a 600% jump in a decade !!! Diverting land meant for food grains to producing ethanol makes no sense.
This year's food price rise is attributed by some "intelligent" people to growing living standards in India and China. It is a baloney.Food prices have risen because vast tracts of land once used to grow food crops are now used to grow alternate fuel. It may be green fuel, but is highly inefficient.

Get ready for
1> Seeing USD 250 per barrel by 2009 Q2 and 300 by 2010Q2.. Goldman Sachs has already predicted it to be USD 200 per barrel, I think Goldman Sachs and Barclays are being conservative in their approach
2> Oil subsidies in developing countries to be withdrawn gradually
3> Food crisis in the world, high inflation, economy growth rate decrease
4> cash strapped airline industry and air fare increase by atleast 30-50% by 2010

What can we do?
1> Be energy conscious, energy conserved== energy created
2> Car pool, walk, take the public transport
3> Invest in companies pioneering wind, nuclear energy
4> Vote for the right candidate!!
5> Influence OPEC.. Knowing any heads of state or your royal linkages might help..
http://rajat.ahuja.name/blog/

Era of guided missiles and misguided men

Before you go through these thoughts, I want to say these are my personal views.
See throughout the world, hot spots of turmoil are geographical areas which are strategic. Kashmir being one example. You can practically watch and intercept the communications between the China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhistan etc. This area overlooks the Karakorum highway.

Another example is Northern Iraq, where the Kurds are demanding an independent / autonomous Kurdistan. It border Syria, Iran, Turkey and this area is important if you need to control the world crude oil supply line. Iraq also has three major river including Euphrates, Tigris which are the lifeline of that part of the world which is mostly desert.

Northern African countries/ Nigeria/ Ivory Coast/ Sierra Leone are again suppliers of crude oil, minerals to the world. This is a haven for arms dealers. I have seen tragedies of child soldiers in this part of the world, enrolled in a private militia. It is like a medieval world and I refuse to believe we are living in modern times when I see children and inhabitants of these lands living in such conditions.

Trillions of dollars are spent on defense but still world is not a safer place. Gone are those days when dictators used to proclaim “one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”. This is insane.
The United Nations looks helpless and it does not help. The world leaders must get together to enforce a comprehensive anti terrorist and anti sabotage policies which could include economic and political boycott of countries supporting any kind of terrorism. But it should keep in mind national pride of any country is not hurt and handled with diplomacy. If you ask me what is the biggest challenge facing humanity today is threat to human life and right to live life with dignity.
The root causes of all such kinds of turmoil’s lies in the fact ethnic and religious groups in a population don’t get their due rights or ways to live with dignity & peace. There could be some exceptions here.

Moderation and giving a chance to the marginalized parts of the civilian society to voice their thoughts might help. India is a great example of multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-religious conglomeration of states. Even though India is a developing country with its set of challenges and the political class credentials, but it still works. India judiciary, media, intelligensia are soul keepers of our nation.

We continue to live on hope.
http://rajat.ahuja.name/blog/

History through my prism

Growing up as a small kid during the 80's and early 90's, there were many history defining moments which influenced me very deeply. During the last 10 years, I somehow lost touch with that one dimension of my identity who was so knowledge endowed about economics, politics, foreign affairs etc.

I would like to revisit those moments and make an earnest attempt to rekindle that spark, with India's 60th year of Independence as stimulus.
Read on…

Before you read the passages below, there is a standard disclaimer J

The views expressed below belong to the author and in no way represent any corporate/govt representation. This is an original work and I hold the C&P rights to these articles below. The permission to reproduce the articles is strictly under written consent from me.

· Rakesh Sharma in space
o I was too young to realize what space meant or understanding the thrill which millions of India were going through when one of them became a cosmonaut(remember the space ship was Russian so no astronauts ;-)).. He was the first Indian to be in space and DoorDarshan the only TV channel existing then was running this footage day in & out. What I remember till date from that incident was Rakesh was an IAF pilot and this got implanted in my mind. My dream post this endeavor of Rakesh was to be a pilot and go to space someday wearing that fancy suit and experience floating with no wings.

· Indira G assassination
o This was one I was in school in Srinagar enjoying with close chums, playing and simply oblivious of what happened that fateful day. Did not realize the gravity of the situation till my sister who was a kid too, escorted me back home. There were fears of rioting in the city and once I was back home, it dawned on me someone prominent in the country was no more. Seeing the flood of humanity paying homage to the departed leader on TV and world leaders of those times arriving in New Delhi meant how much Indira G was respected and revered. Days before her assassination, she had proclaimed last drop of her blood would serve the nation. Destiny is such a cruel teacher. Punjab was up in flames for the next 6-8 years and it was horrifying to hear about those stories.

· Rajiv G ascent to the top post
o When Rajiv took the PM post, he looked to be from a family of royals. Unlike all the politicians in public life those years, he was suave and soon became endearing to the world arena. He addressed the UN forum in New York and the world lapped it up. He was in different capitals and breaking bread with crème de la crème of the world. I used to feel proud of him representing India.
o Rajiv had dreams about modern India who was technologically advanced and a leader in its own right who did not need a UN permanent seat or veto power to show it had arrived. He bought people like Sam Pitroda who delivered the telecom dreams through the vast hinterland of India. He convinced lot of smart people / intelligentsias like Mani Shankar Aiyar left IFS and joined him.

· Cold war fought between proxies of US and USSR in South Asia

o Turbulence in Afghanistan
The first thing which made realize this was watching RamboIII on celluloid. The whole episode of CIA linkages and Russian involvement is well known.
The factor to be considered here was the supreme power of General Zia. He was a sharp, astute, strategic thinker. By a strange coincidence, all well known Generals of Pakistani Army are shrewd. They were also firm believers in bleeding through thousand cuts theory and proponents of guerilla warfare considering the terrains in South Asia (North/NW).

· Early turmoil in Kashmir
o Grenade blast outside my school
In 1989, there was a huge grenade right outside my school. I was barely 9-10 years old and suddenly I matured in those 5 minutes of my life.
I gathered my senses and stood frozen in my class. I did not venture out of the building fearing another attack or ambush. My mother was at home when she heard the huge sound and she rushed to my school to fetch me without caring for her life or anything. Luckily I was out of school by then and walking back home, when I met her. For the next 7 days, I was treated royally at home by everyone. I enjoyed every bit of attention.

· World events

· IPKF in Sri Lanka

· Maldives under siege

· Russian withdrawal from Afghanistan

· German wall collapse

· Tiananmen Square incident in China

As all these events were happening, I used to discuss these with my Grandpa/Dad’s eldest brother and my dad. I used to be told how US was placed in the world politics, history of world wars, economy strength of the Western bloc, Kashmir’s history from Sikander’s time, Mughal influences, story of Indian freedom,

The rest of the topics will take another Saturday midnight, cup of coffee and a mode of deep thinking to finish.
I would love to hear from you how you liked this article J

Cheers..

· Kashmir in flames

§ Migration from Kashmir

· Rajiv G assassination

· Narasimha Rao takes the “hot” seat

· USSR breakup

· Free market economy

· Mumbai under test

· SRK on the celluloid

· New brash India
http://rajat.ahuja.name/blog/

Great expectations

Whenever I think of these words, I remember the great classic written by Charles Dickens the famous English playwright..
I must be 8 year old when the TV adaption of this book used to be telecast on national TV and I asked my father what did “great expectations” mean?

My father being my dad knew who to drive home a point and simply told me
“I wanted you to come first in the class but you did not, you came third . My confidence in your abilities was foundation for my great expectations.”

We have great expectations about ourselves, our lives, our future, our game of life etc.. We dream of big houses, fancy cars, cushy jobs, fantastic friends and partners, perfect life.. isn’t it? What is wrong in that? But I guess before keeping great expectations of ourselves, we must do a quick SWAT analysis of ground realities and avoid disappointments in life..

In life whatever we do and whatever we are is because of choices.

Our life turns to be the way we make our choices.. Like the architect in the matrix puts it, “it is all about choices”.

The more choices you have, life becomes more complicated and unmanageable.. Hence the mantra is have less expectations, work hard, believe in yourself and stand by your choice.. It takes lot of conviction to be honest to yourself and be realistic of your abilities.. Never limit yourself but be aware of your limitations. I m trying this out and hope this works for me.

Our lives are like a matrix analogy, “No one can tell what is a matrix is “ !!
http://rajat.ahuja.name/blog/

Mr Finance Minister, let the markets decide

As the world including China/India termed "Chindia" march towards GDP growth of more than 8% and massive capital being pumped from the Wall Street, industrialization promises to make these countries "stories" of this 21st Century.. If the 19th century belonged to United Kingdom for rapid growth of railways and cotton mills of Manchester, tables are about to turn....

Indian honchos are acquiring companies in Latin America, Australia, Europe.. Archelor, Corus being stale news now...

I still feel we are just scratching the top surface of a gold mine... China & India represent the biggest market in world in terms of capitalization, market potential, margins etc.. But govts in both the countries are controlling the leash.. Indian govt is still running airlines(Air India), railways, hotels (ITDC), telephone services (BSNL) etc.. Govt role is legislative, make policies and laws of the land.. not run hotels.. Nehru's socialism was ideal for the 50's but no longer...

Agreed, these companies are run to ensure uniformity in maintained in terms of connecting remote areas, giving facilities to the less priviledged... But think of it the other way.. Govt divests its portfolio in these companies, earns a neat profit and ensures private players keep the social commitments while making their moolah... Govt will stand to gain because it will bring accountability and transparency as professional will infuse a sense of purpose and discipline in these places...

Govt must be given credit for getting these watchdogs to function and sustain their respective sectors... TRAI/SEBI/.. Absolutely...

Keys questions which need to be answered

1> If the GDP is clocking more than 8% growth on YoY basis, why are the interest rates in India specially so high?

2> US is India's biggest trading partner, what happens when US economy slows down in Q2/2007? Why is India keeping all its eggs in one basket? Why dont we proactively explore other markets like Latin America/ ASEAN ? Our footprints is negligible in these areas..

3> Why are tax reforms aimed at honest tax payers in India? Most of the tax evaders in India dont even bother to have a PAN card, but people who want to work and live in India are ripped @ 30% tax rate without any social security.. and continuous fears of losing tax saving instruments as they will be phased out gradually? Out of 1 billion people, only 20 million people in India pay taxes!!! Yes, this is true...

4>Every bureaucrat atleast above the rank of secretary must function like a CEO with perks of a CEO.. But make him accountable for profitability and growth... Not for running org like a family owned business

5>Why do some selective business groups or should I call them "cartels" be given undue favors and alloted acres of lands of poor hapless farmers? Why cant these groups compensate the farmers adequately? If they cant, they are welcome to go to Angola or anywhere...

6> India is still so dependent on conventional fuels and our import bill for crude touches $20 billion and above on an average? Why cant the country look into alternative fuels like ethanol like Brazil or increase spending on R&D in universities? This demon can derail the whole Indian growth story...

Believe me, we have not even achieved a fraction of what India is capable of. More than 30% of our population is illiterate and our country still lot of people who are poor... Farmers are still committing suicides unable to make their two square meals a day... Our cities are crumbling, infrastructure is in doldrums, corruption is rampant...

1857-1947-2007 The first two years have been landmark years in the history of this nation, I m sure 2007 will herald India into a league of its own and we as a nation can overcome these problems with a smile and welcome 2008 with a renewed hope and faith in our abilities...
http://rajat.ahuja.name/blog/

Honoring our war heroes

The other day I read an officer of the Indian army was killed in the valley. My heart went out to the family of the brave soldier who did not battle an eyelid when he sacrificed his life for a cause..

Are these soldiers fighting a private war? No, they are fighting to keep our borders secure.. U must see how an Indian Army soldier lives in Siachen. He lives on a salary less than a govt grade D employee would earn, but he lives for honor and pride of his country and institution....

The jawan till 1998 did not have snow mobiles or special conditioning camps to get prepared for the harsh weather and a shrewd enemy... Only after Kargil, GOI decided to beef up the security apparatus acquiring arms and thermal equipment from Israel and South Africa...

Do we Indians value our war heroes? The present govt is just providing a lip service to the armed services and their morale. What can we citizens do? We can do a lot, first inform your friends, family, acquaintances about the perils of a proxy war India is facing.. We have victims of terrorism in the worst forms all these years and diplomacy is not going to save the day for us.

Indian intelligentsia have also ignored this aspect. Media is too concerned about eyeballs and TRP's. They are too concerned getting actors married off to each other and finding about a cricketer's sound bytes..Disturbing trend...

Add to this the strife going on in our neighborhood. On the west, we have a country who sponsors a proxy war and is ruled by a dictator who is a turncoat.. He talks peace and disarmament on one side and the other half of him is planning the next big strike..

The Himalayan kingdom has been rocked by violence of the Maoists from the last decade and turmoil there will spill into Indian borders and states affected by Naxalites. West Bengal immediate neighbour is not friendly with India and our neighbor down south has to fight the Tigers who are most ruthless organization of all times...

The biggest economy of the world in Asia who is also part of the UN permanent members with a veto power is making a strategic sphere of influence around India..

We must value our freedom and guard it with zeal. The divide is widening with advancements and development taking place in pockets of the country..

Possible remedies

1> Make sure the legislative arm of Govt and bureaucrats in Ministry of Defence/Finance visit the borderline of the country including Ladakh,Siachen,Andaman,North east, Nathu La etc atleast one a year. They should know the realities before dismissing orders for equipment for our defence forces and terming it as "overhead".
2> Give adequate and timely compensation to the affected families (money cannot get back their loved ones, but the grateful country must ensure they live a life with pride)
3> Modernize the forces.. form SWAT teams and arm them to the teeth..
4> Strengthen intelligence. Get the smartest from the universities, research labs wherever and get them on... The NSA(National Security Agency) in US is the crème de la crème recruiter from Ivy league schools in US..
